What is chiropractic?

A chiropractor is a health care professional focused caring for a patient’s neuromusculoskeletal system — the bones, nerves, muscles, tendons, and ligaments with an emphasis on treatment through manual adjustment and/or manipulation of the spine.

Are chiropractors doctors?

Yes. Dr. Martens is educated as primary contact health care provider. His specialty has an emphasis on diagnosis and treatment of conditions related to the musculoskeletal system (the muscles, ligaments, and joints of the spine and extremities) and the nerves that supply them.

Doctors of chiropractic are educated in orthopedics, neurology, physiology, human anatomy, clinical diagnosis including laboratory procedures, diagnostic imaging, exercise, nutrition rehabilitation and more. Because chiropractic care includes highly skilled manipulation/adjusting techniques, a significant portion of time is spent in clinical technique training to master these important manipulative procedures. Dr. Martens also specializes in dry needling, a therapy used to stimulate underlying myofascial trigger points and muscular connective tissue.

What does a chiropractor do?

Chiropractors use spinal manipulation to remove interference from the body’s nervous system in order to help the body function as it naturally should. Through this, chiropractors can treat ailments, injuries and illnesses such as:

-Acute and Chronic Low Back Pain

-Neck Pain
-Joint, Muscle and Nerve Pain

Does chiropractic work?

Patients often find chiropractic treatments to be effective for a number of issues, including neck pain, back pain, and headaches. Patients have also noticed an improvement in their immune and digestive systems. In fact, chiropractic care helps many of our patients experience relief without the need for prescription medication or surgical procedures.

Are chiropractors safe?

Chiropractic is widely recognized as one of the safest drug-free, non-invasive therapies available for the treatment of neuromusculoskeletal complaints. Although chiropractic has an excellent safety record, no health treatment is completely free of potential adverse effects.

Many patients feel immediate relief following chiropractic treatment, but some may experience mild soreness, stiffness or aching, just as they do after some forms of exercise. Usually discomfort or soreness will subside in 24 hours.

In rare cases, chiropractic care can cause more severe side effects. Please talk to Dr. Martens if you have concerns.

How many chiropractic sessions do you need?

Each patients that comes to Martens Chiropractic has a unique set of circumstances. Sometimes patients will find relief after one or two sessions whereas others will require more intensive care.

Dr. Martens will present a treatment plan for each patient, just as any other medical professional would. Good chiropractors do everything in their power to help their patients feel better as fast as possible with as few chiropractic treatments as necessary, ultimately reducing care to an as-needed follow-up plan. He will also advise each patient on how to change day-to-day routines in order to avoid future problems.

With all that said, routine chiropractic care helps to avoid pain and helps the body function properly as it deals with a variety of environmental factors that can cause problems. Chiropractic care is affordable, non-addictive and safe.

Why do adjustments make a popping sound?

Adjusting (or manipulation) of a joint may result in the release of a gas bubble between the joints, which makes a popping sound. The same thing occurs when you “crack“ your knuckles. The noise is caused by the change of pressure within the joint, which results in gas bubbles being released. There is usually minimal, if any, discomfort involved.
